Line of Inquiry #1 Different types and elements of drama What are the different types of drama? There are so many different types of drama. There are comedy, tragedy,fantasy, melodrama, horror and musical. Comedy is a type of drama which makes the audience laugh because it has a really funny story. It has a different plot and the characters need to try hard to make the audience laugh. Usually, comedy needs a lot of effort to make the situation funny. Even if the character is sad, the character needs to express their sadness in a funny way. Comedy is a really popular type of drama now. Tragedy is a type of drama where accidents, crimes, deaths and something with great suffering happen. It usually makes the audience sad or sometimes cry. The movie "Titanic" is one example of a tragedy movie.Tragedy is one of the first types of drama that was invented in the Greek era's drama. A man called Thespis was really popular for tragedy. He won a lot of competitions and he invented tragedy. Fantasy is just like imagination. It is not real. Unicorns, fairies, powers, monsters,superheroes, dragons, talking animals, talking objects and more are examples of characters in fantasies. Kids who like to imagine things love to watch fantasy. Fantasy is mostly cartoons. Kids usually watch fantasy more then the other types of drama. Melodrama is where characters need to build in chemistry. It is usually about love. It evokes extreme emotions, and it is dramatic. Usually dramatic teenagers like to watch this type of drama. Most of Korean drama is about melodrama. Usually, acting in a melodrama movie needs a little bit more effort because the character sometimes needs to build chemistry with another character. It is really hard to build chemistry with people they just met or not familiar with. Horror is when an audience experience fear. It sometimes gives us nightmares. Some horror movies are true but it is mostly not. Kids usually don't watch horror, but teenagers and adult mostly watch it. The movie "Annabelle" is one example of a popular horror movie. Musical is a type of drama that combines singing, acting, dancing skills. Usually this type of drama is most popular for operas. The actors and actress in operas are really well trained because they sometimes need to reach high notes. Now there are drama musicals. It is similar as operas, but they are going into more modern style. What are the elements of drama? There are a lot of different elements of drama. These are setting, theme,plot, dialog,performance, visual element and music. The theme is referring to the central idea and it is related to the central idea. The theme is basically the moral or the message of the story. Then, there is setting. Setting is the props and also the place we act to. It is like the background of the place also. It is the sets for the play. Plot is the ordering of the scene or the dialog. It is almost like a script, but it is not a script. It is only like a bit of the script. It is like a paper that orders everything up. After plot, there is dialog. Dialog is a conversation between characters or only a person. It is mostly in the script. For example: Mary: "I like burgers." That is an example of a dialog. Performance is a different element of a drama. Performance is the main result. It is the show showed by a actresses and actors. It is all the hard work you've done turn into that one single thing. It is performed on stage or it is either a cartoon movie/video. All the characters will act as their role play at the movie/play. Visual element is the special effects and the background sound. It is ' also visual element also includes make up and costumes. Music has the beat. What are the most important elements of drama? The most important elements of drama are the performance and the plot. Why? The performance is basically the main thing that you have been working on, and it must be performed by the characters. The plot is very very important. If you don't have the plot, it would mess up the whole play. It is very important to have an order for each scene. These are the most important elements for drama and plays. What type of drama is most popular in Indonesia? The type of drama that is most popular in Indonesia is called Sinetron. Sinetron is a type of a drama that Indonesians like to watch. It is a drama series. |

Changes in drama in the course of time
How does drama change in the course of time?
We researched that the first country to do drama plays were in Ancient Greece.
Soon,they did plays, in Ancient Rome. They started plays very early back in the 800's.
They also started using masks to perform. They used masks so the person can play more
than one character. Most performances were about wars and love or romance. In 803,
The actors would dress up as satyrs-Half goat and half man. One of the biggest theatres
in Rome were the Colosseum. In 821, they used first stage curtains, and perfume water
for audiences during hot dogs. After some years in 840, the medieval period had come,
and most men have stared working as knights. Most plays have been about knights
saving princesses and religion. These plays included "Noah and the flood", "David and
Goliath" and "The life of Jesus."In England, plays about the Bible were called as "Mystery
plays." In 842, they also played in the same theatre. During thanksgiving, Performances
would go on for 2 or 3 days. The actors would be local workers and it would not matter
whether they are professionals or not. At that time, all the parts were played only by
men. In 860, they did a renaissance drama in England. This type of drama appealed to
every level of society. It was a rich blend of serious and light-hearted entertainment.
These performances lasted from about the 15th-16th century. In those days most plays
were performed by a group of professional men.At that time, woman were still not
allowed to act so female roles were played by boys.In 862, Shakespeare’s company was
called ‘King’s Men’. Shakespeare plays were performed in specially built theatres. One of
the most famous theatres is the Globe Theatre. Unfortunately, in 1613, the roof caught fire
and within an hour, the building burnt to the ground. The following year, it was rebuilt
with a tiled roof instead of a thatched roof. However, wigs and costumes were torn. In
1642, dramatic theatre was banned. All theatres were closed until 18 years later, when a
new king took the throne. In 864, the longest change was the woman were now allowed
to appear on stage.Over the next few years, the lighting and technical effects became
more advanced. Drama has connected people for centuries until now, giving us the
entertaining performances we have today.
Who was the first actress?
Margaret Hughes was the first actress. She was the first
professional actress. These are some information about her. She
was born on c. 1630. She died on 1 October 1719. Her husband is
Prince Rupert. She was also the first actress that went on stage.
Her child was Emanuel Scrope Howe.
Who was the first actor?
The first actor was from Greece, which
was Thespis. He started by reciting a poem. He recited as if he was
a character from a poem. From that he was known as the world’s
first actor on the 23rd of January 534 BC. In Greece he became a
famous person. Everybody also started to act. Before 534 BC,
theater performances were just story telling or called “Choral”
reading. People didn’t only told about gods and heroes, but they
sang and danced along the storytelling. A Greek chorus was a
group of 12-50 performers who spoke together at the same time
who often wore masks. At that time masks were like treasure to the
performers. The masked are used to interpret the character’s
feeling or mood. The masks were made really large so people far
from the actors could see the character’s mood. The materials of
the masks were usually sculptured. Today all actors are called
“Thespians” in honor of him. Thespis was also credited by winning
the “Best Tragedy” competition in Athens. He is also credited as the
inventor of tragedy in Greece. 23rd of January was not just
memorial for Thespis, but it is when the ghost of Thespis hunt
theatre performances. At that time Greece became really popular
with the word drama. People in Greece mastered drama. Somehow,
like drama is part of their tradition. In the second era of drama, the
romans took place. At that time drama became part of their
tradition. It was so important that Romans that didn’t like drama
has to act because it is part of their tradition. Drama in the
Romanian era is more complex and there are varieties of types of
drama. They introduced comedy and satyr, but they also used
tragedy. People liked the Roman drama because there are a lot
more types and people can chose their favourites.
What type of old drama is used until now on?
Tragedy and comedy is an old drama that is still common and
popular from nowadays. In 800's their plays are mostly tragedy.
Tragedy became really popular in the Greek era. A man invented
tragedy, his name was"Thespis". The Greeks attend
tragedy competitions. They became really competitive, but
Thespis was the one won a lot of tragedy competitions. Comedy
was created by the Romans. The Greeks were only
popular tragedy. In the Roman era, they were popular for comedy,
satyr and tragedy. Now satyr isn't used that much anymore.
People have come with new types of drama which are comedy,
tragedy,fantasy, horror, melodrama and musical.

Purposes of drama
How does drama help solve global and local issues?
Drama does help solve global and local issues. Drama can make a play and make the
moral of the story persuasive and touching. It is helpful. For example, the whole story of
the drama is about the earth dying. People will surely soon realize what is happening and
start to take action by helping save the earth. We could realize and reflect what has to be
done and not has to be done.
How does drama help people?
Drama helps for our creativity by being able to see a different perspective and it develops
new concepts. Drama also make children cooperate by playing video games about drama.
It improves our abilities to act. It also practices our emotions/feelings. It helps people because
if the people is sad or depressed, they will watch comedy videos, movies, etc. It will make the
person cheerful and happy. So, it also helps people's emotions. Drama also helps
concentration by listening to other's ideas, thoughts and to take turns. By doing these activities
it allow children to know the amount of the concentration.
